The Finnish startup is releasing an electric motorcycle not only with a hubless rear motor, something we’ve only seen in concept bikes so far, but a motorcycle with only one brake. Why? Because the Verge TS doesn’t need two.
Because electric motorcycles don’t require a clutch, there’s no need for a rear brake pedal. Instead the hand levers control the braking. This also gives freedom over the positioning of the footpegs, forward for comfort, or rear for a sportier feel. For this reason the Verge TS comes with two sets of footpegs.
The hubless motor gives the Verge TS a real advantage over its competition. Motorcycles normally deliver power from its motor to the rear wheel via shaft, chain or belt drive. Even the latest electric motorcycles from Harley-Davidson, Zero and Energica do it. The Verge TS’s electric motor is integrated into the rear wheel itself. So rather than the wheel and tire spinning, only the tire is spinning. This configuration means that no traditional drive chain or belt is required.
Verge TS Features and Specifications
The Verge TS comes equiped with Ohlins suspension and a Brembo dual disc brake, enough to keep any serious motorcyclist happy. Tires are Pirelli front and rear, removing the rear tire from the hubless motor is no difficult than removing from a standard motorcycle setup.
Weight is always a concern with electric motorcyles, dictating performance, handling and range. The Verge TS does have an aluminum frame which helps offset the weight of the battery pack. Range wise Verge claim a city riding ability of 186 miles with 124 miles deliverable on the freeway. The bike is also compatible with DC fast chargers reducing charge time from 4 hours down to 50 minutes.
Performance specs are impressive. The Verge TS produces 107hp and 737 lb-ft, providing a 111 mph top speed and the ability to do 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds. Because of the Verge TS’s hubless motor and the fact it doesn’t have a traditional drivetrain that torque figure is without loss.
The company is offering refundable pre-orders with a deposit of around US$2500. Final pricing once it reaches production will be closer to US$30,000
