The saying goes an easy way to make any motorcycle more sexy is to “Scrambler” it and that’s just what Switch Motorcycles have done with their new retro-inspired electric motorcycle which is due for release in early 2022.
The eScrambler was designed in partnership with Matthew Waddick, a New Zealand designer who brought an electric conversion kit to the legendary Honda Cub moped via Shanghai Customs and Michel Riis, an ex-Yamaha Advanced Labs designer and former Danish Flat Track champion.
The result is a mid-sized electric motorcycle which is belt driven and has a powerful mid-mounted motor. The ‘fuel tank’ now hides much of the electronic wiring to provide an overall clean look to the bike. Having a traditional tank not only helps retain the classic motorcycle aesthetic but also provides the rider somewhere to grip their knees while riding, an important feature left off but some other electric motorcycle designs. Yes Sondor I’m talking about you.
Performance wise the eScrambler does well for a mid-sized electric motorcycle. The 50kW electric motor provides a top speed of 150km/h (93 mph) with a real world range of 150 km (93 miles). There’s also some neat technology added into the eScrambler, including GPS tracking, a modern digital display, three riding modes, cruise control and USB phone charging.
The eScrambler is still in its prototype stage and some early criticism aimed at it is the lack of rear fender, the design at present is illegal in some countries. The tires also help reinforce the scrambler look but a street option would also be nice as it’s doubtful they preform as well on wet concrete. Another nice option could be a longer seat that enabled a pillion passenger, something that would provide some broader use and appeal to the bike. This is definitely a motorcycle that has the look of a scrambler without the actual intention of any serious off-road use. Belt drives and stones are something that never mix well.
