2021 Zero SR/F Review

The SR/F from Zero Motorcycles is the naked street-fighter version of their recently released full-fairing brother the SR/S. For 2021 the SR/F gets an update of new colors and graphics.

Zero SR/F Electric Motorcycle

The Zero SR/F comes in two flavors for riders to choose, Standard and Premium. Benefits of the premium package include heated grips, cruise control, and a 6kW rapid charge system (compared to 3kW system on standard model). The 6kW integrated charge system on the premium model will reduce 95% charge from 80mins to 60mins when accessing a 6kW rapid charging station.

The SR/F retails at $19,495 for the Standard and $21,495 for the Premium model. Colors available are a very stylish black with silver and mint green and red. There are three seat options available for riders to choose from, standard height is 31″ with a low version at 30.3″ and a high option of 31.9″, something I’m sure riders with a shorter inseam will appreciate.

Stopping power comes from dual J-Juan radial 4-piston calipers with 320mm rotors at the front and a single piston caliper with 240mm rotor at the rear. Incorporated with this on the Zero is Bosch’s Motorcycle Stability Control. MSC combines straight line and lean angle sensitive ABS and traction control. MSC also regulates engine braking torque control, wheelie control, hill start control and rear wheel lift control. Bosch controls this via a sensor that detects lean or roll angle, chassis pitch, acceleration, deceleration, so that it can accurately feedback the overall dynamic behavior of the motorcycle.

All that acceleration and braking technology is something the rider will definitely appreciate on a motorcycle this powerful. The Zero SR/F produces a neck snapping 140 lb-ft (190 Nm) of torque. To put that into perspective the 2020 Ducati Panigale V4, one of the most powerful production combustion motorcycles you can buy, produces 91 lb-ft of torque. With that amount of acceleration instantly accessible to riders having smart technology like MSC and Cypher III will enable a much safer and enjoyable riding experience.

Tires are Pirelli Diablo Corsa Rossa III with a front of 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 rear. The SR/F utilises a carbon belt drive instead of chain drive, less common in sports bikes but a lot of riders will appreciate the minimal maintenance it provides. Front suspension is provided via Showa 43 mm Big Piston forks and the rear a Showa 40mm piston piggy-back reservoir shock, both fully adjustable for preload, compression and rebound. Curb weight of the Standard SR/F is 485 LBS with the Premium version adding an additional 13lbs due to the additional charging pack.

Range on the Zero SR/F is maxed at 161 miles (259 kms) with city riding down to 82 miles (132 kms) of highway travel based on a speed of 70 mph (113 km/h). These stats are the same whether you go for the Standard or Premium models, the benefit of premium being a shorter recharge when utilising a 6 kW fast charge system. Whether you decide the additional $2000 is worth the faster charge cycle will depend on how adventurous your riding is and if your bank balance allows.
