BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02

Just in time for IAA Mobility 2021 BMW Motorrad has unveiled a smart urban electric concept vehicle that is an exciting mix of motorcycle and scooter.

When the public think of BMW’s motorcycles they usually think well designed, serious machinery with good technology. But the German motorcycle manufacturer has released some innovative electric motorcycle and scooter concepts over the last few years. Some like the CE 04 Electric Scooter have been bought into production.

At first glance, there is little about the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 that is typically BMW Motorrad – it’s something completely new. We want to strive for something novel and be pioneers – which is what we’ve proven ourselves capable of with various projects in the past. The Concept CE 02 features new proportions and modern forms of single-track mobility in an urban environment. In addition, we wanted to achieve a level of design innovation that we have not had before at this level. Straightforward use was important, but above all the emotional component was crucial, as well as riding fun.

Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad

The Concept CE 02 isn’t just urban sheik it also pushes performance. Top speed is an impressive 90 km/h (56 mph), with a range of 90 kms (56 miles) in an urban environment. The bikes aesthetics and basic seat lend it towards short urban commutes but when needed it is capable of much more.

The Concept CE 02 is designed to encourage non-motorcyclists to jump on and have a go. The flat body with a low centre of gravity and low seat height are inviting and confidence inspiring for the new rider, as are the large disc wheels which promote straightforward riding fun. And showing their true direction in attracting a young demographic the Concept CE 02 even sports a stakeboard mount at its base. Given the CE 02 doesn’t seem to have standard foot pegs the skateboard can even double as a foot rest.

Lighting is provided via four square LED lights at the front and a small translucent LED is fixed on either side of the seat on the rear. The bike utilises a drive belt, single-sided swing arm, single rear shock, and a small colour display on the handlebars providing basic information, connected by a visual cable harness to complete the urban look.
