On the back of the Neo’s 4 liquid cooled 4-stroke 50cc scooter Yamaha has released the 2022 Neo’s Electric Scooter with an air-cooled brushless three-phase synchronous motor and the option of dual swappable batteries.
The Neo’s employs a direct drive hub to the rear wheel, this eliminates the need for a belt drive reducing maintenance and efficiency. The single-sided swingarm also houses the motor control unit which simplifies the rear wheel removal for maintenance and tire replacement.
The NEO’s offers two power modes, Standard and ECO. Standard provides at top speed of 25 mph via 2.8 Hp where as ECO gives a maximum 22 mph via 2.1 Hp. Given the Standard mode on the Neo’s is only equivalent to a 50cc scooter I can’t see any benefit to ECO mode as it provides only an additional one mile of range. Something you would use only with severe range anxiety at the time.
Yamaha provide two colour options, Milky White or Midnight Black. Both have the signature Aqua accent stripe along the front fairing and under seat, something Yamaha is adopting with its two wheeled electric vehicles.
The Neo’s has under-seat storage which will accomodate an open face helmet but that’s only if you settle for the single battery version. Grab the dual battery and that option is taken away.
The Neo’s lithium-ion battery comes in at 18 pounds (8 kgs) with a power supply rated for 1kWh via its 50-volt, 19-amp design.
The Neo’s also comes with Smart Keyless ignition and communicates to your smartphone via Bluetooth. The Yamaha MyRide app provides a range of technical and maintenance information and also keeps track of the scooters location.
Yamaha also provide a range of accessories for the Neo. There is a Top Case which also comes with an optional Backrest. You can also choose an apron for protection in inclement weather.
At this stage the 2022 Yamaha Neo is a Euro only model. It will be available from May priced at around £3005 in the UK (€3,546.49), prices will vary in other European countries depending on incentives and benefits.
