The RM1 is produced by British company Maeving, founded in 2017 from predominantly ex-Triumph engineers looking to create a retro styled British built electric motorcycle with swappable batteries.
The RM1 is powered by a hub-mounted motor designed and built by Bosch while the battery is supplied by Samsung – both companies are heavily involved technically in the project.
Maeving have made the RM1 only available via their website which is then delivered to your door. Currently there are no plans for a dealer network however they will be opening a few ‘pop-up’ retail shops, firstly in the London area.
The Maeving comes in two options, single or a dual battery, costing £4995 and £5990 respectively, you also have the option to purchase the second battery separately.
Build quality on the RM1 is excellent and its relatively low weight of 111kg (single battery) makes it an agile bike and easy to manoeuvre at slow speeds or while parking. Both front and rear brake levers are mounted on the handlebars, making it an easy transition for scooter and bicycle riders, no traditional rear foot brake on this motorcycle.
Power output is rated at 3 kW (4 hp) with a peak of 4.4 kW (5.9 hp), and 160 Nm of torque. This puts the RM1 at around the same performance as a 100cc single-cylinder bike. So not designed for speed freaks or long highway cruising that’s for sure. This motorcycle is the perfect short trip urban commuter for those riders wanting a classic or retro inspired look.
Throttle response on the RM1 is definitely muted, so perfect for new riders. Mode 1 provides a maximum speed of around 45mph (72 km/h) while Mode 3 limits torque and restricts maximum speed to 20 mph (32 km/h).
