2021 Zero FXS – The Perfect Urban Commuter?

The 2020 Zero FXs is the perfect commuter for the urbanite looking at alternative transport over the electric scooter, skateboard or a hire service such as CitiBike.
This is Zero’s entry level electric motorcycle, designed around quick commutes and short rides.

Pricing for the Zero FXS starts at US$8,495. That may not seem like a cheap commuter option but in the world of electric motorcycles it’s very affordable. The Zero SR/F comes comes in at $19,495 and the Harley Livewire will set you back at minimum of $29,799.

Performance

The Zero FXS in supermoto fashion is a true performer. With its weight below 300lbs it’s a very nimble machine and it has the suspension and travel to handle a kerb or some stairs should you decide to take a quick detour on your way to the office.

The Zero FXS has three power modes: ECO, CUSTOM and SPORT. When getting familiar with the bike ECO is your best choice. It provides around a half second of smooth acceleration before it punches you to near oblivion. Like a lot of electric motorcycles this bike has tons of torque. Perfect for getting away first from the lights post lane splitting or manoeuvring yourself out of a tricky traffic situation.

Fit and Finish

The Zero FXS has a solid feel despite it’s light weight. LCD display is basic but functional, no fancy graphic TFT display here. Seat is minimalist but perfectly adequate for city riding, it might come as a shock to riders used to high quality gel seats though.
Switch layout is simple, there’s buttons for lights, ride mode, run/stop, indicators, horn. The components on the FXS are functional but not high grade, this is after all a 8K electric motorcycle. It’s not an issue but at this price point you can’t except premium.

So is the Zero FXS the perfect commuter electric motorcycle? For the short urban commute, Yes.

This bike is comfortable on the street and the highway, just be aware of the range. It’s fast and nimble and with it’s lightweight you can wiggle this bike in and out of areas you wouldn’t attempt on a large bike. Parking in the city is easy, you can even park it in a bicycle rack and it wouldn’t look out of place.
Recharging is simple, all you need is a standard wall outlet. The charging cord is conveniently stored in the bikes rear swingarm (why not?) and will charge overnight for your next commute.
